Image paste, drop and upload are available in repository documents in the local workspace. The browser demo has no asset storage and does not upload images.

Insert an image

  1. Open a repository document in Visual editor.

  2. Put the cursor in a paragraph, heading, list item or table cell.

  3. Paste an image from the clipboard, drop a file at the desired position, or use Add image in the toolbar.

  4. Wait for the draft to save, then use Review changes to inspect the document and its image before submitting.

Add one image at a time. Supported formats are PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP, up to 5 MB and 32 megapixels. SVG is not supported. Each document can have up to 20 staged images.

Where images are saved

An image is staged locally in an assets/ directory beside its Markdown document, using a unique filename. The editor inserts a relative Markdown link, such as ![screenshot](assets/unique-id.png).

Pasting an image does not send it to GitHub. Acknowledged saved drafts retain the image across a refresh. Submission includes the document and its referenced staged images in one commit. The submission limit is 20 MB and 100 files, including images.

Undo or remove an image

Undo removes the insertion from the Markdown. The staged bytes remain available locally for redo until the document is submitted or discarded.

An image whose generated path no longer occurs in the document is excluded from submission. A path left in a code example or plain text may still count as a reference; inspect the image list during review. Staged assets belong to their document. Submit them before reusing their paths in another document.

Preview existing images

Supported repository images inside the selected folders can preview through the backend. External images and unsupported formats appear as placeholders; the editor does not fetch arbitrary external image URLs.

Save a copy downloads Markdown only. It is not a ZIP of the document and images. Use the repository submission to save both together.
